VIDEO: Coyote Swimming in the Bay Likely from Pack that Fixed Many Angel Island Issues

Swimming coyotes spotted in SF Bay highlight dramatic ecological shift on Angel Island since 2017, with deer and raccoon populations crashing. What makes this swimming sighting particularly remarkable is how it represents the complete ecological transformation of Angel Island since 2017. For as long as California State Parks staff could remember, coyotes simply didn't exist on the 1.2-square-mile island. Then, as Bay Nature details, a disbelieving ranger spotted one, then another, and another. The impact has been swift and dramatic. Deer that once fearlessly lounged on the visitor center lawn now "timidly skirt among shrubs and bushes," according to Bay Nature. Casey Dexter-Lee, who has lived on the island for 14 years, observed the change firsthand: "Around the time the last ferry left, the deer would come and hang out on the lawn in the visitors center.Ferry operators have become accustomed to these aquatic crossings—Ashley Kristensen, operations manager at the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry, has witnessed coyotes swimming across Raccoon Strait multiple times during her 15 years on the job. According to Bay Nature, captain Aaron Swerkes has spotted the swimming coyotes several times over his three decades of Bay sailing. The coyotes appear to be living in what Bay Nature describes as "an island paradise." They regularly feast on fallen fruit beneath Catalina cherry and Canary Island date palm trees, encounter visitors and staff at all hours, and leave scat scattered across trails and roads.

Invasive Blue Catfish: The Chesapeake's Biggest Problem - Wired2Fish

The state of Maryland has videos showing electro shocking operations and the great abundance of big blue cats in the state’s Chesapeake Bay watershed. Invasive blue catfish are wreaking havoc on the Chesapeake Bay. Anglers and commercial harvesters should catch as many as they can. They’re not hard to catch, and at the end of a dinner fork they’re darn good eating. But in tidewater Chesapeake Bay, they have become such an overwhelming problem that they’re devouring native baitfish, crabs, oysters, clams and just about everything else that gets in their way. There are so many blue catfish that anglers targeting striped bass, perch and other species have to battle their way through blue catfish to get their target species, say some anglers. Blue cats outcompete native species for habitat and food, and they’ve taken a real chunk out of Chesapeake Bay’s beloved and once bountiful blue crab fishery. The state’s DNR reports that “blue catfish spread rapidly throughout the Chesapeake Bay during the late 1990s and 2000s. Stocked as an additional recreational fish in Virginia rivers by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in the 1970s, blue catfish were later found in the Potomac River.
